Kurani designed schools that are closely aligned with our communities. –New York City Schools
New York City developed the EPIC High School model to improve college and career preparedness of Black and Latino boys through empowerment practices, applied learning, and career coaching. Kurani was asked to design a replicable campus prototype capable of supporting this mission across 8 city-wide campuses.
We partnered with the school district to meaningfully involve staff, students, and community in the creation of the schools they would ultimately be using. This co-creation process had many forms, including visioning workshops, design critiques, and even live curriculum experiments in different learning environments.
The resulting design is a culturally-relevant campus environment equipped with exploration labs, meditation space, a build barn, and a trust forest. But this is no pie-in-the-sky design. The concept takes into consideration very realistic challenges that many New York City schools face: sharing a campus with multiple other schools, accommodating hundreds of students on a single floor, updating derelict and outdated facilities, and creatively manipulating the 28-foot structural grid. Our design demonstrates how to navigate these endemic challenges while shaping an environment tailored to the specific needs of school users, curriculum, and EPIC Schools model.
